Eastern Temples Bamboo Sticks Divination: Siam Cee or Kau Cim

Welcome to our version of the ancient bamboo stick oracle you’ll find in Eastern temples and shrines. In China it’s known as Kau Cim (求籤), in Thailand as Siam Cee (เซียมซี), in Japan as Omikuji (おみくじ), and in Vietnam as Bói gậy. Though the names and the styles of the writings vary, their essence is the same: you bow, you pray, you ask your question, then you shake a container of sticks until one slides out, guiding you by its number.

Our version is based on versions we’ve used in Buddhist temples and shrines in Thailand: Siam Cee. Each number, from one to a hundred, has ten numbered lines covering different aspects of life:

  1. Overall Fortune
  2. Work and Business
  3. Legal Matters
  4. Health
  5. Travel
  6. Loss and Recovery
  7. New Relationships
  8. Existing Relationships
  9. Warnings
  10. Merit‑Making and Karma

In temples, you’d typically find a pink slip of paper with your number on it and read it. The front would contain the above information, and the back would summarise it.

In case you aren’t satisfied with your fortune, you can perform another reading, but first you must pray again and imagine burning your first fortune to clear its energy (as done in temples).

To begin:

  • Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and center your mind.
  • Bow your head or make your usual gesture of respect to the Buddha, Guanyin, or the guardian spirit of your choice.
  • Focus on the most important question you seek guidance on and ask it.
  • Imagine holding the can of sticks in your hands, gently shaking it until a single stick falls out before you; be careful not to spill the whole can.

When you’re ready, click the image below to shake the can and get your stick.
